I hope you’ve enjoyed our posts about daily routines for children and that you’ve found the FREE printable charts to be helpful. Bedtime Routines for children are a MUST! If you’re like me, bedtime often seems like a race with a few hurdles thrown in just for fun!
Just like with our morning routines, our bedtime routines are a reminder of what needs to happen before bed. It keeps the children on track. It’s a simple stress-saving solution!
Creating better bedtimes starts with a routine.
Our nightly routine usually looks like this:
- Go to the bathroom
- Brush teeth
- Put on PJ’s
- Dirty clothes in basket
- Clean clothes in drawer
- Book time
- Lights out
This might seem like such a simple routine but if you have even partially distract-able children then our Printable Routine Chart is for you! Having this visual list helps the children to stay on task. Simple, yes but a powerful tool in our home.
Just like our other routine charts you can print this out, fill in your own routine and laminate the chart. We keep ours in the children’s bedroom but you might find that the bathroom or hallway are better locations. Pair these routines with our tips below and we hope that you notice an improvement in bedtime in your home.
3 tips for a peaceful bedtime in your home:
1. Don’t rush
This is one that I’m very guilty of. When the clock hits 7:30 I usually dive right into our bedtime routines. I need to chill out and maybe you do too. Stressing and rushing through the bedtime routine helps no one. Those last few minutes before bed help to relax your child and are sweet, special moments together. Don’t miss out. Read a book with your child, cuddle a few minutes longer or use those few minutes to sit on their bed and just talk about their day. Slowing down sets the tone for the night and creates a more quiet, peaceful sleeping environment.
2. Set the scene
Make sure your child’s room is set up for good sleep. A cooler, dark, quiet room will help your little one to sleep better. We would often play a quiet instrumental CD before bed for the children. This was not only calming but also blocked out some of the sounds from the rest of the house. We don’t put nightlights in our children’s rooms, we found that the dark room really does help them to sleep better. We avoid drinks of water after dinner and that helps with the bathroom breaks in the middle of the night.
3. Be consistent with bedtime
Our bodies get into a rhythm and like routine. Putting your children to bed at a regular bedtime will create a routine that their bodies can expect. Studies have found that going to bed very early or very late didn’t affect cognitive performance, so long as the bedtime was consistent. Do you best to stick to a regular bedtime and see if that has a positive effect on your child’s bedtime.
