This Week Was a Pain – Literally

This week I’ve been pretty much laid up, nursing an injured back. I’d love to say it was a nice break from my regular routine but it wasn’t. It was a pain. Literally!

I woke up Tuesday at 4am with unbearable pain in my back and leg. I could not move. At all.  Let’s just say there were of tears, shaking, and very loud moaning in pain. (Drama, people!!)  It was not my finest hour (or two).  I have never felt so much pain in my life and I hope I never have to again.  After much deliberation (aka. me yelling in my pain “just help me!!!!” ) we decided to skip calling 911, the ambulance and the hospital and wait until we could get into a chiropractor later that morning.  I was not thrilled with this idea but I knew that there wasn’t really anything the hospital could do in my situation. I also knew it was a problem with a nerve in my back and I knew I needed a chiropractor.  In addition to that we knew that going to the ER would rack up thousands of dollars in medical bills that we are just not prepared to pay ambulance (b/c I could not move at all!) X-rays, MRI, etc!).

Finally I was able to make it off of the floor and on to a chair.  My wonderful mother-in-law came and took the kids to her house so they didn’t have to witness their mom in so much pain.  Once the chiropractor opened for the day we went in.  After 2 hours of adjusting, icepacks and therapy I was able to stand and walk out (I didn’t even have to use the handicap ramp!).

After hunting down an icepack at Walmart we headed home and I rested. I think I fell asleep sitting up 2 times. My pain slowly crept back in and about 2 hours after we got home I was in pain again. I took some strong pain meds and iced my back and made it through the night.  Day 2 – I was back at the chiropractor for another 2 hour session. This time they used a traction table to decompress my back.  It was brilliant.  I walked out once again feeling pretty good. The pain came back slowly but it was a huge improvement from the previous day. I knew that I need to take it easy, but that’s easier said than done.

I headed home all alone, thankful that the kids were dropped off at the babysitters for the day.  In the afternoon Rebekah (SimplyRebekah.com) called offering to drop off some chili that a friend of ours had made for our upcoming Meal Exchange.  I was so grateful, a meal that required NOTHING of me!  When Rebekah arrived, along with her adorable little girl, she surprised me when she looked around and asked, “Ok, now what can I do to help? Wash the dishes? Vacuum?”

You know when you KNOW you need help but you don’t want to ask.  You know when you are just needing someone to come in and offer this kind of help!  Rebekah wouldn’t take no for an answer and insisted on cleaning my living room.  And clean she did!  With toys, socks, and other messes all over the room, I had to let go of my pride and let someone help.

In no time my living room looked great and dinner was ready to go.

So, there you have it. That’s what I’ve been spending my week doing. I’m glad to say that I’m able to move around with very little pain (when medicated!) and I’m starting to feel better.  Next week I’ll be sharing The Top 10 Things That I’m Thankful For – The Bulging Disc Addition.  You won’t want to miss it!!

Thank you to all my fellow bloggers and online friends for your prayers and encouragement this week. It helped me so much. I’m blessed to have such an extensive “team” of encouragers and praying ladies!

Oh that STINKS Donna! But Rebekah, you’re awesome! I’m glad that you’re on the mend, even if it means being worked over by the chiropractor. I’ve come to appreciate my chiro lately. I’m praying for you my friend! 🙂
