How to Plan a Surprise Getaway With Your Spouse – Part 1

The last few weeks have been very stressful for my husband.  Work has been busy.  My mother has been living with us for the last 3 months.  The kids have been cranky.  We haven’t had time alone in months.  I knew that he needed a night away, with no kids, just the two of us.  So I started sneaking around planning a special weekend away.

I started hunting around for hotels in Philadelphia.  I scoured the Internet for a really nice hotel in  Center City.  I wanted to be right in the center of it all, so we could walk everywhere.  Once found the perfect hotel I started planning for a special dinner.  I stalked all of my favorite daily deal sites:

Groupon
Double Take Deals
Living Social
Eversave

I found a great deal on a $50 gift certificate to a very nice restaurant.

Once all of my plans were in place I had to decide HOW I would surprise him.  I decided to wait for him when he got home from work and get him in the car immediately.  This would be tricky.  This meant that I had to have all of our bags packed, the kids sent off to my in-laws house, and everything in place and ready to go.  I devised a plan to act a bit upset when he got home and act like we really needed to talk , NOW.   Then I would ask him to sit in the car with me so we could talk.  I created a letter that I would then hand him to read while I quickly started the car and began to drive away.

On Saturday morning everything was going smooth.  Kids were packed up and shipped off to the in-laws.  Our bags were packed and loaded in the car. I had my directions, my coupons and the letter for Kevin to read in the car.  The only thing left to do was to wait.  So I waited. . . and waited. . . and waited.  1 whole hour PAST the time that he was supposed to be home.  This sure made the whole ” We need to talk” attitude easy.

When Kevin pulled up I was sitting on the back steps waiting for him.  He gets out of his car and asked me what I was doing outside.  I told him, ” Hey, we really need to talk, get in the car.”  He looked worried— my plan was working!!

He got in the car and I handed him this:

I started the car and we were off!!  He was stunned, I had succeeded at surprising him!
