5 Simple Ways to Create a Warm and Inviting Home

Create a Warm and Inviting Home

Ever Grateful - Reversible Table Runner   **This post contains affiliate links – your purchase through one of our affiliate links help to feed our family. 🙂 Thanks! ** Every spring when the weather begins to warm up I get the urge to entertain.  It’s something I truly enjoy.  I love being able to open our home to our friends, relax and enjoy spending time together.  Being a mother to two very busy and active {read: messy} toddlers can make entertaining difficult.  I do not consider myself an expert in this area but I’m learning as I go.  Today I’m going to share 5 simple ways to create a warm and inviting home. Before I get into my tips I wanted to share a very important note:

Your friends are not coming over to inspect your home and critique your housekeeping skills. They are coming over to spend time with you.  Georgeous homes in magazines have been emptied out, staged and polished by professionals.  Your home is meant to be lived in and should look that way.

1.  Tidy up

Remembering that your friends are coming to see you and won’t be bringing their white gloves to check for dust, do clean up.  Take time pick up the clutter and do a quick clean sweep of your home.

  • Dust – This should take 10 minutes max to quickly go through your home and dust off flat surfaces
  • Wipe – Grab a cloth and your favorite all purpose cleaner and do a quick run through the house, wiping any fingerprints, smudges, spills and stains.  Wiping off tables, counters, mirrors and dining chairs of any mess.  No body likes to see your kids cute fingerprints all over.
  • Swish and Swipe – This is a phrase taken from FlyLady.net and it is something that I try to remember to do daily.  Grab your toilet brush and give your toilet a quick swish.  Grab a cloth and give your mirror, sink and finally toilet, a quick swipe.  I often use toilet paper to wipe down the toilet and then simply flush it away.
  • Vacuum – Run through the main area of the home with a vacuum freshening up the carpets and removing those stray cheerios.  { I even use a powder that I purchased years ago when I was cloth diapering, I believe it was called Diaper Dust, I believe the shop I got mine from has since closed but I did find another great option HERE .

2. Lighten up

Open those shades and turn on the lights!  Lighting is not an area to forget about.  One of my pet peeves is going to someone’s house during the day and it’s all shut up, shades pulled, dark and cold; not a very inviting feel.  Let the lights shine in!  If it’s a dinner party don’t be afraid to light a few candles.  Mood lighting is nice, just remember that you want to be able to see what your eating and who you are eating with.

3. Freshen up

A few hours before your guests arrive freshen up your house.  Light a few candles or open the windows.  Everybody loves coming into a nice smelling house.  One of my dear friends Emily always did this so well.  She always had a little pot on her stove.  She put some water, orange (or other citrus) peels, a cinnamon stick, vanilla and maybe other spices and let it simmer.  Her house always smells great!  I try to remember to save my orange peels and put them in a container in the freezer just for this purpose.  If all you have on hand is some air freshener spray, go ahead and give it spray (just don’t go overboard!)

4.  Dress it Up

Bring out your favorite decor.  Create simple yet beautiful displays on your coffee table or mantle.  Little details are a nice touch.  Display things you love or collect. Books, dishes, jars, antiques or photos all create a nice look.  Grab a vase and head outside with your scissors; fresh flowers always brighten up a space.

5. Don’t Get Hung Up

Don’t allow perfection keep you from entertaining.  Keep it simple or go all out, whatever you enjoy doing.  Just remember, your friends are coming to see you, I’m sure they won’t walk out just because of the cheerios under a chair.  This is real life after all, not a Better Homes and Garden article.

One of my favorite places to find home decor items is Dayspring.  They have beautiful and meaningful items that I love to use.  Dayspring kindly sent me one of their beautiful trays to review. The Wonderful Grace – Carved Wooden Serving Tray is beautiful.  Trays are a great tool for decorating and entertaining.  I love the size of this tray. The tray is about 14×14 on the inside.  It’s not too bulky.  I can easily us it on my side table in the living room or on the buffet in the dining room.  The Message On Tray reads: wonderful grace,  simple joy,  unending hope,  authentic peace,  unfathomable love. The scripture on the back: From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another. John 1:16 NIV

This tray would make a great Mother’s Day gift and right now it’s on sale over at Dayspring. It’s 50% Off!
