Needing Your Thoughts on Lent

candle at night by ashley, on Pix-O-Sphere

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday. Many of my friends online are now celebrating Lent. I only remember one year where my church “made a big deal” about Lent. Only once. I think that because I’ve gone to a non-denominational church all of my life I’m not as versed in Lent.

Although I may not be starting Lent on time I want to find a way to focus on the price that was paid for me. I want to intentionally focus on Jesus. Focus on Jesus, something I can’t say I’ve done all that well lately.

If you have a minute I’d love to hear your thoughts. Share your reasons for celebrating Lent. How do you decide what to give up. What would you suggest for a “Lent Newbie”?

I’ve grown to love Lent (and really the idea of following the church calendar) more and more. I’ve grown-up in Southern Baptists churches for most of my life, so this has definitely been more personally-led than community-led for me.

I like the time for reflection and a more intentional focus on repentance. I know I’ll often ask God’s forgiveness for something I’ve done wrong (an attitude or whatnot), but not really seek to go beyond that surface, “God, please forgive me?” and get to the root of the real issue.

I also think that far enough after Christmas that the steam, enthusiasm, motivation, or whatnot I had from Christmas is wearing out, so it seems like a natural call to action.

As for giving something up, there’s been years when I haven’t, but when I do I try to choose something that I run to instead of Jesus.

Hey! I have a post scheduled for Monday about this 🙂 It’s definitely something that is new-ish to me, and more so for my husband. I’d love to hear your thoughts about my post next week (should be up around noon).
