How to Take Screenshots on a Mac

One of my favorite little tricks on my Mac is the ability to take partial screenshots or select an area on the screen to capture. I take screenshots for a number of purposes.

If you want to take a screenshot of just a portion of your screen, for example, you may want to copy the header of a website you like to show your graphic designer. There are several ways to do this:

  1. Command-Shift-4 will allow you to select a specific area on your screen and copy it, so you can paste the image into the document you are working on.
  2. Command-Control-Shift-4 will allow you to select a specific area on the screen and automatically save the selected screenshot to your desktop.
  3. Command-Shift-3 will take a full screenshot of the entire screen, without having to select the specific area you want and automatically save the selected screenshot to your desktop.

For the partial screenshot methods, once you complete the keystroke a small cross-hair will appear, you can then select a rectangle area that you wish to copy.

**Please remember that when using screenshots you still need to obey the law! The following is from Wikipedia, and a very good reminder:Some companies believe the use of screenshots is an infringement of copyright on their program, as it is a derivative work of the widgets and other art created for the software. Regardless of copyright, screenshots may still be legally used under the principle of fair use in the U.S. or fair dealing and similar laws in other countries.

I’d love to hear your creative uses for screenshots, leave a comment and share your tips!
